WORD RECOGNITIONClasificación: POS 2019 Resumen: This research aimed to find out whether parts of speech classification can improve students’ reading comprehension in a private language school in Loja. A mixed-method design was used to gather quantitative and qualitative data. A pre-test and a post-test were used to measure students reading comprehension and to record the number of words classified according to parts of speech. Results demonstrated that there was an increase of classified words on the posttest compared with the pretest. Cohen’s d was calculated and the result obtained was 0.22 (medium effect size). Furthermore, there was an improvement in the reading comprehension results with an increase of 1.83 points in the means of the pretest and the posttest scores. Additionally, students’ perspectives towards reading comprehension were measured with a pre and a post survey through a Likert scale. Results revealed that participants changed positively after the intervention. Consequently, it was demonstrated that classifying parts of speech is an effective technique for students to improve reading comprehension. These findings have significant implications for both English teachers and learners in the academic field, particularly to those who want to improve reading comprehension. VOCABULARY RECOGNITIONClasificación: POS 2019 Resumen: Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo mostrar la influencia de clasificar el vocabulario y utilizar estrategias lectoras para mejorar la comprensión de textos. Los participantes fueron 15 estudiantes, de 14 a 16 años, con problemas de comprensión de lectura y vocabulario de un instituto de idiomas en particular. Esta fue una investigación acción con un análisis de datos cualitativos y cuantitativos. Los instrumentos para recopilar datos fueron encuestas previas y posteriores, pruebas previas, registros de aprendizaje, formularios de escaneo y escaneo, mini cuestionarios y una entrevista. Los resultados mostraron que hubo una mejora estadísticamente significativa en el conocimiento de las funciones de las palabras en contexto desde el pre al post examen. El resultado fue una mejora promedio del 28.2% en el rendimiento de los estudiantes. Se calculó Cohen d con un resultado de 1.09 que indica que hubo aprendizaje. La mejora constante en las estrategias lectoras fue ejemplificada por la capacidad de completar correctamente los formatos. De la misma manera, las perspectivas de los estudiantes fueron positivas para esta innovación. VOCABULARY ACQUISITIONClasificación: POS 2019 Resumen: This innovation focused on analyzing the effects of classifying vocabulary into parts of speech using the technological tool of Google Drive sheets. This six-week action research study was applied to 33 students in a private high school institution in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Surveys, learning logs, pre and post- tests were instruments used to get quantitative and quantitative data for the analysis. Through the quantitative method, this study reported an improvement of reading comprehension skills with vocabulary enrichment of 33% and an effect size of 0.79 noticing a positive effect on the application on this innovation. According to students’ answers in the learning logs, they had a positive opinion towards this implementation. Thus, in view of Ecuadorian students need to enhance their reading comprehension skill and due to the very little information on classifying parts of speech to do it; this innovation should be implemented.
